Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is skin resurfacing with Venus Viva?

Venus Viva uses NanoFractional radiofrequency to safely treat a variety of skin conditions, including:

  • Acne
  • Scars
  • Visible pores
  • Deep wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Lax skin
  • Uneven skin texture

The Viva handpiece delivers radiofrequency energy through micro pins deep into the tissue, stimulating collagen growth and triggering skin’s natural healing response, while leaving top layer of your skin largely intact.  This is why there is so little downtime with this procedure compared to traditional laser resurfacing.  This also translates to much less risk of scarring, hyper- or hypopigmentation.

How does skin resurfacing work?

Prior to treatment, Dr. Cheng applies a topical numbing cream to reduce pain and ensure your comfort.  She then applies the handpiece methodically over the treatment area.

During treatment, the treated area will feel warm — like a sunburn. The procedure is not painful, but you may feel some minor discomfort. A treatment session usually takes around 45 minutes, depending on the condition and size of the treatment area.

Although immediate results can be seen, in most cases, 3-4 treatment sessions are needed and spaced about one month apart to achieve optimal results.

What can I expect after skin resurfacing treatment?

The Nanofractional radiofrequency technology by Venus Viva causes far fewer complications than traditional resurfacing lasers. That means minimal downtime and little to no pain after your treatment session. In some cases, you may experience some swelling or redness, but that should subside on its own.

For the first 24 hours, you have to avoid wetting the treated area.  You will also be provided special serum and healing balm to speed up healing.  After 24 hours, you can resume your normal skin care routine.  Dr. Cheng is a strong advocate for always wearing sunscreen when you are outside, and this is especially important after resurfacing treatments.

Am I a good candidate for skin resurfacing?

If you have skin concerns such as moderate to severe wrinkles, scars, pronounced pores, skin laxity or stretch marks, you may be a good candidate for skin resurfacing. Dr. Cheng evaluates your overall health to make sure the treatment is safe for you.
