IPL Photofacial Q & A

What is an IPL photofacial?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) technology systems are different from lasers because they can emit energy at variable wavelengths to customize treatment. Dr. Cheng offers IPL photofacials at her Rowland Heights office to help improve your appearance by diminishing signs of aging, including:

  • Sun spots
  • Discoloration
  • Visible veins and capillaries
  • Fine lines
  • Uneven skin tone

The treatment is not limited to the face – hands, arms, décolleté, are all areas affected by sun exposure and can benefit from IPL treatment.

How does an IPL photofacial work?

Dr. Cheng uses the Venus Versa™ SR handpiece to perform the photofacial treatment. First, she applies a topical numbing agent to ensure maximum comfort. Then, she uses the handpiece to use the energy of light to treat the problematic areas. The sensation you feel during treatment is similar to being flicked lightly on your skin; there is minimal discomfort.

The specifics of your treatment depend on a variety of factors, such as your condition and the size of the treatment area. A typical session lasts about 30 minutes.

One of the main advantages of a noninvasive IPL photofacial is that there is very minimal downtime. You can even make a same-day appointment for a quick treatment session during your lunch break.

After the treatment, your skin may feel slightly warm and may appear red for a few hours. This is normal and should subside on its own.

How long will results from an IPL photofacial last?

Typically, you will need 4-6 treatment sessions to achieve optimal results. How long your results last depends on a variety of factors, including your skin type, skin care routine, and environmental factors like stress or medications you may be taking. Protecting your skin from sun exposure is also key to helping your results last longer, Dr. Cheng is a strong advocate of always wearing sunscreen whenever you are going outside.

After the series of treatments, Dr. Cheng will continue to monitor your skin during regular visits and evaluates whether you need any touch-up sessions. It may be beneficial to repeat treatment every 6-12 months, again, depending on your unique situation.
