Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a nonsurgical, pain-free procedure that creates precise micro-injuries in your skin to spark your body’s natural healing processes, stimulating collagen production and improving your skin’s texture and elasticity. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Acne
  • Acne scars
  • Visible pores
  • Fine lines
  • Stretch marks

Microneedling can also rejuvenate hair growth by administering deeper injections of hair growth agents like platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

How does micro needling work?

At her Rowland Heights office, Dr. Cheng uses the CosmoPen, a medical-grade, high-speed microneedling system. After applying a topical numbing anesthetic to the treatment area, she uses the device to make precise punctures at adjustable depths.

The CosmoPen handpiece has a disposable tip made of 12 fine 32-gauge needles that create microchannels in your skin. To heal, your body naturally produces more collagen, creates new tissue layers, and boosts blood flow to the treatment area. In addition, the microchannels improve the absorption of topical application of medical grade serums or biological agents such as PRP to further help improve the overall health of your skin.

With the CosmoPen handpiece, Dr. Cheng can improve your skin with a same-day microneedling treatment that involves minimal pain and little to no downtime. Typically, Dr. Cheng recommends 6-8 treatment sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart. However, hair rejuvenation microneedling treatment may require more visits, normally 10-15.

After the procedure, you may feel some burning or minor pain, and the treated area may look red, similar to a sunburn. You can resume normal activities usually within the same day, while practicing good sun avoidance and staying hydrated.

Am I a good candidate for microneedling?

If you have fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pronounced pores, or early signs of hair loss, you may be a good candidate for microneedling. When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Cheng evaluates your condition, reviews your medical history, and determines whether you’re a good candidate for a CosmoPen microneedling procedure.

Is microneedling safe?

Yes, CosmoPen microneedling is perfectly safe. As with any procedure, there are potential side effects, including:

  • Swelling
  • Numbness
  • Scarring
  • Discoloration
  • Infection

However, the risk is minimal and any side effects typically subside on their own shortly after treatment. Dr. Cheng is more than happy to answer any questions when you come in for your free consultation.
