Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox Logo

Botox is a medical treatment that contains a naturally produced toxin, made from the bacterium clostridium botulinum, which can be used for a variety of cosmetic and health purposes. Medical professionals inject Botox in very small doses to paralyze certain muscles. By decreasing contractions of the muscles, Botox injections can treat conditions like:

  • Smile lines
  • Forehead creases
  • Crow’s feet
  • Facial lines

Other less well-known applications of botox injections include:

  • Eyebrow lift
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Bruxism (excessive teeth grinding)

In addition to Botox®, Dr. Cheng offers other FDA-approved brands to treat the same conditions, including Dysport® and Xeomin®.

How does Botox work?

First, Dr. Cheng determines which muscles are responsible for your condition. Then, she administers a very small dose of Botox with a small needle — usually no anesthetic is necessary, however topical anesthetic can be provided for additional comfort. In all, Botox injections take less than 15 minutes.  There is no downtime after the procedure, and you can resume your everyday activities right away.

Your treatment plan will likely consist of ongoing injections, since the muscle-weakening effects of Botox last for about 3-4 months.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

During your initial consultation with Dr. Cheng, she evaluates your condition and reviews your medical history to make sure there are no contraindications to you receiving Botox injections. You may be a good candidate if you have the above mentioned concerns.

Is Botox safe?

Botulinum toxin injections have been safely used clinically for more than 50 years.  In trained hands, it is very safe.  However, as is the case with all procedures, there are some potential side effects, including:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Headache

These side effects typically subside quickly and without interventions. More serious side effects are extremely rare, but if you do experience anything out of the ordinary after a Botox treatment, contact Dr. Cheng right away.
